NOT THE FUCKING HELP - Blank Space Gallery

Not the fucking help
08.03.2019 - 24.03.2019

Opening Reception: 08.03.2019, 18:00-21:00

Blank Space presents its newest group exhibition Not the fucking help, an international group exhibition which focuses on art and design from countries typically relegated to the service industry, to show that these countries offer more than cheap labor, massages, and kebabs.

The year is 2018, and immigrants make up nearly â…“ of Oslo’s population. You’d think it would be less controversial to ask for representational programming in Norwegian exhibitions (outside of those who have been hired to clean the toilets and fix the walls in the gallery).

Welcome to an exhibition highlighting designers from countries whose primary reputation in the Norwegian eye is still relegated to construction, babysitting, massages, beauty salons, food industry, and textile work. We highlight work from Poland, Ukraine, Thailand, Philippines, Pakistan, Somalia, India, and Vietnam - but open our walls to anyone who feels misrepresented and even a little bit angry about being told, yet again, to be grateful to live in a land where we cannot use our cultivated skills, but should instead get a job at “I don’t know, a sushi place or something”.

These artists’ only crime is being born in a country with a hard work ethic, and their passion burns as bright as anyone’s. In an attempt to fight the public opinion of the usefulness (or uselessness) of immigrants, we shine as bright of a light as we can on the amazing design that comes from these countries. These artists are owed an actual opportunity in Norway - though not because they deserve any charity, but because they are fucking worth it.

We round off the exhibition with a series of discussions about immigration politics from the individual, corporate, and government level.
